Build a better future

Despite his disability, with all his determination and internal strength, a man has found a new way of building a better future: raising pigeons. His name is Nguyen Ba Tam.

Growing up in Dong Trieu District, Mr. Nguyen Ba Tam soon started his career as a miner at Mao Khe Mine. Unfortunately, in 2008, he had an accident and lost a leg. The sudden loss drove him into great despair. However, he just could not lose himself for he knew he had to do something to take care of his family. He wondered about a new start. Thanks to information he got fromnewspaper, he realized that raising pigeons is not difficult yet profitable. He decided to making ends meet by this source of livelihood. But then, the next question was “where can I get money”?

At the beginning of 2009, M7-Dong Trieu expanded to Mao Khe Town thanks to fund from Cordaid. He immediately registered to attend the orientation workshop, training workshop. Understanding the mechanism and products, he determined to apply for a loan and was approved a borrowing of VND 3 million.

Mr. Tam came to Hanoi to buy three pairs of breeding pigeons which cost him VND 1.5 million. The Center for breeding animals of Dong Trieu also supported him with another two pairs. He invested the rest of the money into a bird-coop and feed. After just two weeks, the first pair of pigeon started to lay eggs. Forty-five days later he could sell the very first grown-up pigeons. His flock continued to grow bigger. He also tried to learn from other skilled farmers, books and journals to improve effectiveness and quality. By the end of the first loan cycle, he made an average profit of VND 1 million per month.

In the second cycle, his loan size was lifted to VND 8 million thanks to his good credit history and capacity for using loan. He was able to invest more into his pigeon flock. With experiences accumulated, he succeeded in shorten reproduction duration of parent birds, and thus, increased the number of pigeon litters to 8-10 per year.

At the present, he is now possessing about 300 pairs of parent pigeons and nearly 100 pairs of newly-born birds. He also plays as the main supplier for local restaurant in Quang Ninh province. In May 2012, his new loan of VND 14 million was approved by Dong Trieu branch so that he can further expand his business.

I owe my success to M7-Dong Trieu. It came to me just in time. Being able to borrow and repay in installments helped me to do business.” Currently, his monthly profit is approximately VND 10 million. He wants to borrow more so that he does not have to borrow other financial institutions or money lenders at 3%/day. He also nurtures bigger plans: “If I have enough capital, I will make a pond to raise fishes and eels. I also want to promote hygiene production of pigeons and share my experiences with everybody so that other people also know how to enrich.” M7 will also try to support him in making his dreams come true.
